VUUCP/2- VUUCP Replacement for VBBS 6.10+
Copyright 1993 Scott Call
-----------------------------------------
Release 2.3
ALL NEW DOCUMENTATION! PLEASE READ THROUGH.
Welcome to VUUCP/2 2.3
Thank you for choosing the ONE fully-functional interface
to VBBS and the InterNET/USENet. This will be the last full release
(barring any bug fixes) before VUUCP/2 3.0 which will be in 'C', and
not need waffle. VUUCP/2 3.0 will also have, hopefully, an OS/2 32-bit
native mode executable available. I have tried to simplify installation as much
as possible, given the timeframe I allow myself for programming, and hope it's
as painless as possible.
If you are having trouble installing the WAFFLE program, please refer
to the included 'Examples.Doc' file that contains a my complete set up for WAFFLE.
To Upgrade an Existing Copy of VUUCP/2 (Or R.D.G's VUUCP):
UnZip the VUUCP223.zip file into your vbbs directory
Run the following: CONVERT NETWORKID=x (where x is the slot you use)
The KEYS.x file is no longer needed
NOTE: If there is an error the first time you run the new version,
try deleted the MAIL file in the WAFFLE/ADMIN directory.
New Installation:
First you must obtain a news and mail feed
(Services Include: NetCom, HoloNet, CRL, CCNet, etc..)
Install WAFFLE 1.65 (or greater) as you would if you were running it.
(see WAFFLE docs and EXAMPLE.DOC)
Get WAFFLE operational in it's ability to send/recieve mail and news
UnZip VUUCP223.ZIP into your VBBS directory
Configure the network information with VCONFIG (usually slot 5 or 9)
Run VUU2CFG.EXE (included with VUUCP223.ZIP)
Make sure all options are set correctly (for a detailed view of what
each option means, see the table below)
Run the command VUUCP /D NETWORKID=x to see if all is well.
Setting up E-mail functionality:
E-Mail functionality is built into VUUCP with no additional setups
Make sure the USER directory in VCONFIG is the same as the one
in your waffle/static file.
A User must send out an e-mail or post to a newsgroup in order to
be able to recieve e-mail.
The Username is derived from the first 8 characters of the user's handle.
Dr, Mr, and The are deleted from the begining of usernames
Duplicate usernames are issued usernames in ascending order
(ie bob, bob1,bob2,bob3)
Setting up NewsGroup functionality:
Newgroups are a bit hard to set up than E-Mail
To setup a newsgroup in WAFFLE, edit the waffle/system/usenet file
Add the complete name of the newsgroup onto the bottom of the file
Use One line per newsgroup.
To Setup newsgroups in VBBS:
Go into Vconfig, and create a message database as usual
Under network configuration, select the UUCP type network you are using
Enter the complete name of the newsgroup into the network indentifier
Repeat untill all new newsgroups have been added.
Use VCONFIG to compile network information for databases
Contact the administrator at the site you connect to and
request that the newsgroups you want be added to
your feed.
All should work well.
NOTE on Warnings:
VUUCP will warn you, with red writing, and a message in the log file
(If it's turned on) that certain directories don't exist. Don't worry about the
messages if they are refering to a newsgroup's directory, because WAFFLE
doesn't create the newsgroup directories until it recieves a message in that group.
If the warning references a user directory there may be a problem, contact me,
the author, for help.
Organization Lines:
To add an Organization: line to all your outgoing news and mail,
add the following line to the vbbs/data/net.x file (again, x refers the the network slot)
organ=SomeGreatEtherialBBS (xxx)xxx-xxxx
Deleting Users:
One of the reasons the KEYS file concept was abadoned was that it made
life difficult for SysOps who wanted to delete individual users from their system.
In VUUCP/2 2.3, all one needs to do to delete a user is to delete the directory
named after them in Waffle's USER directory. There will be at least one file in
each user directory, "VUUCPUSR.DAT" don't worry about deleting this, it's unneeded
once the user has been deleted.
Command Line Switches:
The following command line switches are available in VUUCP/2:
VUUCP /A Networkid=x <-- Answer incoming UUCP type call
VUUCP /D " <-- Dial out (Calls POLL.BAT)
VUUCP /R " <-- Import mail/news from WAFFLE to VBBS
VUUCP /U " <-- Export mail and news to WAFFLE from VBBS
VUUCP/2 and VBBS-OS/2:
I am personally running this version of VUUCP/2 and WAFFLE 1.65 flawlessly
under IBM's masterpiece, OS/2. I am useing Ray Guinn's SIO driver, and
have WAFFLE set to run off a FOSSIL driver. Contact me if you have problems.
VUUCP/2 3.0 will, of course, circumvent all these problems.
Known Errors:
After exporting a post into a newsgroup, VUUCP/2 will often start spitting the
following out onto the screen:
ACCESS DENIED
or
FILE NOT FOUND
Don't worry, that's a cosmetic problem that will be cured soon enough.
Distribution of this or any other program written by Scott Call is
limited to free, public access BBSs. No fee shall be charged for the files,
and any charge for media (CD-ROM/etc.) must be approved by the author.
Violation may result in prosecution.
VUUCP/2 2.3 Highlights/additions:
FIXED all known bugs, including the elusive 'illegal function call in line 0'
FIXED problem with duplicate user addresses in a better way than before.
FIXED problem with invalid characters in usernames.
Changed the file formats around to be able to handle an unlimited number
of users.
Changed E-Mail routines completely, resulting in speed increases upwards of
500% in email importation
Beta Tested for over 2 months, so I'm 99.44% sure it works.
Decreased amount of time before an unregistered copy expires.
Added CONVERT.EXE to upgrade pre 2.3 configurations
Added a 'Reply-To:' field to messages, so even unmapped sites should
be able to recieve replys to messages.
Much Much more.
YOU MUST RUN VUU2CFG BEFORE USING THIS VERSION.
NEW: The WAFFLE Admin path is the same as in WAFFLE/STATIC
(usually x:\waffle\admin)
NEW: The Reply-To: line is entered in the following format:
*%pil@ness.com OR pil!*@ness.com
where * is translated into the username when VUUCP is run
The VBBS Data path is the same as you have set in VCONFIG
The VBBS Db path is the same as you have in VCONFIG
The SPOOL path is the path to the directory where outgoing
UUCP Mail is stored (usually x:\SPOOL\server)
Logging: Produces a LONG log of activity, use
only when reporting bugs/etc unless
you want a huge file of logs...
Networkid: VME used to be hardcoded to poll only
With networkid 5, since other people use
other slots now, I made it configurable.
OPTIONAL: In order to have VME.EXE check outgoing USENet activity and poll:
Rename the VME.EXE in the VBBS 6.1 archive to:
"REALVME.EXE" and then rename the "FAKEVME.EXE"
program to "VME.EXE". This is NOT recomended if
you have to make a long distance call to your feed.
OPTIONAL: I have included a source mod to modify the VBBS quoting system to
Meet a defacto-standard of USENet. The modified structure is only
used when R>eplying to USENet/Internet messages, and leaves the rest
unaffected. *This mod is untested with VBBS 6.11 Beta
Hope that helps. Enjoy...
If you need help, please feel free to call me at my BBS and
be sure to subscribe to the VUUCP/2 support sub in VNet and RushNET.
(look for alt.vuucp coming soon)

Well, quite frankly, this program was a b*tch to write.
I had to decode the data types used by RDG (wouldn't want a co
